Two Kinds of Property in One City
Tree Service in Inver Grove Heights covers more ground than in most east-metro suburbs. The city spreads over about 30 square miles of what Wikipedia describes as rolling countryside, and it was formed in 1965 when the village of Inver Grove merged with Inver Grove Township. By 1880 the township had 240 farms. Today about 93% of residents live in urban areas, but the remaining rural share means we spend time on wooded acreage as well as on suburban yards. The two need different equipment, different pricing and sometimes a different approach entirely.
Suburban yards
In the newer neighborhoods, the work looks like it does across the south metro: structural pruning on maples and lindens that are reaching the roofline, removal of declining ash, and stump grinding so the lawn can be reseeded. Many of these yards are on slopes, which is typical of the terrain here. A tree on a sloped backyard is often easiest to remove in sections, with the wood carried uphill to the driveway, rather than felled.
Acreage and wooded lots
On larger parcels the job changes. Owners usually want several things at once: dead trees taken down before they fall across a drive, a clearing for a garden or outbuilding, and overgrown brush and buckthorn pushed back from the house. We can work through a property in phases, starting with hazard trees near buildings and driveways and leaving lower-priority clearing for later. For trees that pose no risk to people or buildings, leaving some standing dead wood in the back of a large lot can be fine for wildlife. We will tell you which ones are worth the money to remove now.
Bluffs and the river
The city lies west of the Mississippi, and the Pine Bend Bluffs Scientific and Natural Area protects part of the river bluff. Pine Bend is also where geologists identified an ancient meteor impact structure about four kilometers across. For homeowners near the bluffs, the practical issue is slope. Trees on steep ground near the river are harder to reach and harder to rig, and some sit on land with protection rules. If you are near the SNA or a protected bluff, check with the city before clearing anything.
Ash and oak timing in Dakota County
Inver Grove Heights is in Dakota County, which is an emerald ash borer quarantine area, so ash wood cannot be moved to non-quarantined areas. For oaks, nearby Mendota Heights advises against cutting live oaks from April 1 through July 15, the high-risk window for oak wilt. Dakota Electric Association, the electric cooperative based in Farmington, also skips oak trimming from April through July except in emergencies. We follow the same calendar.
Lines on rural roads
If your property is served by Dakota Electric, the co-op notifies members six to eight weeks before pruning near its lines. It removes dead trees along its lines when they are hazards, but not dead trees along the service drop to your home. Those are the ones we get called for. - River bluffs. The Pine Bend Bluffs Scientific and Natural Area lies in the city along the Mississippi and is the site of an impact crater dated to about 500 million years ago, roughly four kilometers across.
- Dakota County quarantine. Dakota County is an emerald ash borer quarantine area; ash wood and regulated ash products cannot be moved to non-quarantined areas.
- Co-op line clearing. Dakota Electric notifies members six to eight weeks before pruning, removes hazardous dead trees along its lines but not along service drops to homes, and does not trim oaks from April through July except in emergencies.

Inver Grove Heights Questions
Can you clear a few acres of brush and dead trees?
Yes. We usually start with dead trees near the house, outbuildings and driveway, then clear brush and buckthorn in the areas you want opened up. Larger jobs can be split into phases with a separate price for each.
Dakota Electric trimmed near the road. Why did they leave the dead tree by my house?
The co-op removes hazardous dead trees along its lines but not dead trees along the service drop to your home. That one is the homeowner's responsibility, and it is the kind of removal we do.
When should I have my oaks pruned?
Avoid April through mid-July, the highest-risk period for oak wilt. Late fall and winter are best for routine work.
Can I burn ash wood from a removal on my land?
Burning it on site is generally fine, but the wood cannot leave the Dakota County quarantine area. Check local burning rules before lighting a brush pile.
