Ash Deadlines and Lakeshore Lots

Right now, much of the Tree Service in Shoreview we are called for involves ash. Shoreview's city page says every ash tree in the city either is or will become infected by emerald ash borer unless it is treated, and it asks property owners to remove untreated ash. EAB was confirmed in Shoreview in 2011. More than a decade later, untreated ash trees have mostly gone from declining to dead, and the city has no funding to help with private removals. If you have an ash you have been meaning to handle, this is the time.

Treat or remove: Shoreview's guidance

The city lays out only two options for ash: treatment or removal. Treatment is for trees with a low-level infestation that are otherwise healthy and have no more than 30% canopy decline. It uses trunk injections, such as emamectin benzoate, repeated every other year. The city's own in-house treatment program is full, and many untreated trees are too heavily infested to treat effectively. For trees past that point, removal is the only sensible option. We will tell you which side of the line your tree is on.

Oaks need the right season

Shoreview has a lot of oak, especially on wooded lots around the lakes. The city's advice to residents is to avoid pruning, wounding or felling oaks from March through November to reduce the risk of oak wilt. That is a cautious window, and we respect it. Routine oak pruning in Shoreview goes on the winter schedule. If a storm splits an oak in summer, we make the hazard cut and seal it right away.

Seven lakes

About 15% of Shoreview's area is water. The largest lakes are Turtle, Snail, Owasso and Island, and Rice Creek runs through the northwest part of the city. Lake lots bring their own tree work: shoreline trees with shallow roots in wet soil, views that owners want opened up, and slopes leading down to the water. We can thin and raise a canopy to open a view without stripping the tree, and we keep debris out of the lake.

Hiring advice we agree with

Shoreview gives residents a short list of hiring tips: get more than one quote, never pay in advance, be wary of door-to-door solicitors and anyone eager to remove a healthy tree, and make sure you understand what the quote includes. We think that is good advice. Our estimates are written, itemized and free, and we are happy to explain every line.

Shoreview Questions

Does Shoreview help pay for removing private ash?

According to the city's EAB page, no. It has no funding for private removals. Questions about the city's program go to its natural resources staff at 651-490-4667.

My ash has about a quarter of its crown thinning. Is it treatable?

Possibly. Shoreview's guidance puts the cutoff at about 30% canopy decline for otherwise healthy trees. Close to that line, it is worth a professional look before you spend money on either option.

Can you open up the view to the lake without killing my trees?

Yes. We thin selectively and raise the lower canopy instead of topping. The tree stays healthy and you get a view through it.

Why won't you prune my oak in October?

The city's advice is to avoid oak pruning from March through November. Unless the tree is a hazard, we wait for winter.
