A Lakeshore Village With Mature Trees
Tree Service in Mahtomedi happens on some of the most tree-covered lots in the east metro. The city was platted in 1883 on the shore of White Bear Lake, and its name comes from the Dakota words for bear and lake. It covers about 5.7 square miles, but more than two of those are water, so only about 3.5 square miles are land. That small footprint, with old lake cottages, larger estates and mid-century homes mixed together, means big trees on lots where there is very little room to work.
Shoreline trees and wind
Wind blowing across White Bear Lake hits lakefront trees harder than trees a few blocks inland. Shoreline soils are often wet, and trees growing in them root shallowly. After heavy rain followed by wind, a lakeside tree can tip with its whole root plate. We look for trees that have started leaning toward the water or the house, soil cracking or lifting on the side away from the lean, and old limbs extending over docks and boathouses.
When we work on a lake lot, we plan cuts so wood lands on dry ground, not in the water. On narrow lots we often lower every piece on ropes rather than dropping it.
Mature oaks in the neighborhoods
Off the lakeshore, many Mahtomedi neighborhoods have large oaks. Oaks here face the same oak wilt risk as anywhere in the metro: fresh wounds in spring and early summer attract the beetles that spread the disease, and the fungus also moves through grafted roots between neighbors. We schedule routine oak pruning for late fall and winter, and if an oak is damaged in a summer storm, we seal the cuts immediately.
Two counties at the edge
Century Avenue forms the boundary between Washington and Ramsey counties here, and Mahtomedi is on the Washington County side. Washington County residents can use four Ramsey County yard waste sites: Arden Hills, Battle Creek, Frank and Sims, and White Bear Township. White Bear Township is the closest of those that take trees and branches. Stumps with roots are not accepted at any of them, and tree companies cannot drop material there. When we do a job, the estimate says exactly what we haul.
An older population with mature yards
Mahtomedi's median age is about 44.5, and many owners have lived in their homes for a long time. The trees around those homes have aged with them. We handle the climbing, cutting and cleanup, and we can plan a schedule of pruning visits every few years so a big storm does not catch you with a heavy, overgrown canopy.

Mahtomedi Questions
Can you remove a tree right at the water's edge?
Yes. We rig it so the wood comes down onto land, keep chips and sawdust out of the lake and work from the shore or a lift as access allows.
Where can I take my own brush?
As a Washington County resident you can use some Ramsey County yard waste sites. White Bear Township is the closest that takes trees and branches. Leave stumps out and bring proof of residency.
Can you open up my lake view without hurting the trees?
Yes. Selective thinning and raising lower limbs let you see the lake through the canopy without topping, which would weaken the tree.
Do docks and boathouses change how a removal is done?
Yes. We map out what sits under and around the tree first, then lower limbs away from those structures instead of letting them fall. Sometimes that means a lift on the lawn side and more rope work.
Can we schedule regular pruning?
Yes. Many owners of mature lots prefer a visit every few years. We note what was done each time so the next visit starts where the last one ended.
