Tree Work in a River Town
Tree Service in South St. Paul often means working close to things. The city incorporated in 1887 and grew up around the Saint Paul Union Stockyards, where Swift and Armour once employed thousands. Workers' houses went up on the hills above the river on small lots, and many of those blocks are still there. With about 3,700 people per square mile, South St. Paul is one of the denser suburbs in the metro. When a tree here needs to come down, there is usually a garage, a fence, a neighbor's house and a power line within reach of it.
Slopes toward the Mississippi
The city drops toward the river, and Grandview Park sits on the bluff overlooking it. Homes on and below the hillside have trees growing on grades where a limb or a section of trunk can slide or roll after it lands. On those lots we plan the cut sequence so every piece is controlled: limbs lowered on ropes, wood moved uphill to the street, and nothing allowed to run down the slope toward a house below. If a tree on a slope is leaning more than it used to, especially after a wet spring, have it looked at. Saturated soil on a hillside lets a root plate move.
Ash wood and Dakota County
South St. Paul is in Dakota County, which is an emerald ash borer quarantine area. Ash wood and other regulated ash material cannot be moved out of the quarantine to non-quarantined areas, and the beetle can emerge from cut firewood for up to two years. If an ash comes down in your yard, the wood either gets chipped or goes to an approved ash disposal site inside the quarantine. Neighboring Mendota Heights advises avoiding ash removal and pruning between May 1 and September 30 when you can, since that is when adult beetles are active, and we follow that timing for routine work.
Lines and clearances
Overhead lines run through many backyards and alleys here. In 2025 Xcel Energy said it was increasing the clearance it keeps between trees and power lines from 6 feet to 10 feet, on a trimming cycle of roughly four to seven years, and that homeowners may be responsible for cleaning up some wood. Utility crews clear the main lines, but the service drop to your house is usually up to you. We prune around service drops carefully, and if a tree is tangled in a primary line we will tell you to call the utility before anyone touches it.
Common jobs here
- Removing large silver maples, box elders and ash crowding older houses
- Lowering wood piece by piece over garages and fences
- Pruning for clearance over alleys and service lines
- Stump grinding in tight side yards with narrow equipment
- Storm cleanup on hillside lots
Plan ahead
The stockyards closed in 2008 and the old industrial land is being redeveloped, but the neighborhoods above them are full of mature trees that predate most of their owners. Call (651) 374-8562 and we will come out, look at the tree and the access, and give you a written quote.

- River setting. The city lies immediately south and southeast of Saint Paul in Dakota County, and Grandview Park overlooks the Mississippi River.
- Dakota County ash quarantine. Dakota County is an emerald ash borer quarantine area; moving ash wood or regulated ash products to non-quarantined areas is prohibited, and EAB can emerge from cut wood for up to two years.
- Utility clearance change. In 2025 Xcel Energy announced it was increasing tree-to-line clearance from 6 feet to 10 feet in Minnesota, on a trimming cycle of roughly four to seven years.

South St. Paul Questions
My tree is on a slope above my neighbor's house. How do you take it down safely?
In pieces, from the top down, with each section lowered on a rope rather than dropped. Wood is moved uphill to the street. We look at the slope, the soil and what sits below before we price it.
Can I keep the ash as firewood?
You can burn it at home, but it cannot leave the Dakota County quarantine area, and beetles can still emerge from it for up to two years. Many owners have it chipped instead.
Who trims the branches around the wire to my house?
The utility generally clears its main lines; the service drop to your house is usually the homeowner's job. We prune around service drops, and if a tree is touching a primary line we will ask you to call the utility first.
Do you have equipment that fits through a narrow side yard?
We plan for tight access on most jobs here. Where a machine will not fit, we carry wood out by hand and use smaller grinders for stumps, and the estimate reflects that.
